OPI: DS Extravagance

Hi lovelies!

I apologize for not posting yesterday. Jayo and I have decided to reduce the number of weekly posts because of our crazy schedules. Starting this week, I will be having intensive classes from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Mondays to Wednesdays for three weeks - all these on top of my regular classes! I don't know how I will survive the next three weeks. Urgh. I will probably go around for my classes like a zombie. @_@

Anyway, if you have been following me on twitter, you would have known that I've given up trying to have nice long nails. I don't know about you but I seem to type a lot slower because the nails keep getting into my way! Since I was too lazy to use my file to take down the length, I clipped my nails - only to realize I've clipped them too short. So... say hello to my new nubbins!

Oh wait, they don't look that short today. Ah wells, they were a little stubbier a few days ago.

Because it is still Chinese New Year, I decided to stick to brighter colors and picked OPI DS Extravagance.

Extravagance is an incredibly stunning deep raspberry with a scattered holographic effect. Unfortunately, the sun wasn't out today so I was unable to capture the holographic sparkles. If you look closely, you can see flashes of color peeking out from the nails and the bottle. What's more, if you just angle your nails slightly, you will be able to see a slight golden flash where the light hits the nail, very subtly lighting up that area. Freaking gorgeous!

Here's a macro bottle shot to show you the hol-iness:

What do you think of Extravagance? What are your favorite DS-es?

The Versatile Blogger Award

Hi lovelies!

Because we're both busy with CNY visitings, we're unable to prepare our usual post for today. So, today's post will not be about polish. :( Instead, we'll share a little bit about ourselves in this post~

A while ago, we've been awarded the Versatile Blogger Award by Susan from The Subtle Shimmer. Thank you, Susan! <3

As part of this award, we're to list 7 things about ourselves.
Since, there are two of us, we've decided to list 7 things each:

7 things about Jayo:
  1. I am inexplicably, uncontrollably, head-over-heels in love with Jay Chou! <3
  2. On the first day of Chinese New Year, I watched 逆战 (The Viral Factor), starring Nicholas Tse and Jay Chou. Obviously it got 4.5 stars out of 5 in my books. EVERYBODY GO WATCH IT!!!
  3. I am a fan of Samsung phones - using my 7th now! =D
  4. I do a lot of my shopping on GMarketSG. So much so that everytime my friends see me carrying, wearing or using something new, they'd ask: 'Is that from GMarket?' >_<
  5. My motto for nail polishes: BBB - Bright, Bold and Bling!
  6. I have very high tolerance for nail polish chipping off. I don't feel the urge to remove it even if more than half on each nail has chipped off. Lol. Usually my friends will complain or ask before I get too bothered by it =X
  7. Some part of my hair has always been dyed since I was in secondary school =))
7 things about Mich:
  1. I'm still a student in uni - will be graduating this year!
  2. I've been obsessed with nail polish since I was very young - I would use play-doh / plasticine and mould it onto my nails and pretend they're colored.
  3. Although I like to paint my nails, I'm otherwise a t-shirts and shorts girl.
  4. Apart from nail polish, my other weakness is gadget - expensive interest, I know.
  5. I like to get my hair done (whether cut, treatment, dye or otherwise) once every few months - it feels good when they fuss with my hair.
  6. I also like listening to music - both Chinese and English songs. I'm not very particular about it so long as it sounds good. Having said that, I have a soft spot for Jay Chou's songs too.
  7. If my tech gadgets are any indication, I must be an Apple fan - I use an iPhone and a Macbook Pro. :)
Lastly, we're to pass this award to another 15 bloggers. But since it is quite a difficult task to pick 15 from among all the talented nail bloggers, we've decided not to tag anyone in particular but feel free to take up this tag if you're interested :)

Franken: Purple Rose of Virgo

I'm back at it again. I couldn't help it! Frankening is too fun ;p
I've so many franken ideas running through my head and it's killing me because I have no idea how to source for supplies in Singapore - especially the suspension base, cosmetic glitters, etc. Any suggestions? :(

Anyway, back to the polish. This time, I dabbled with glitter:

I apologize for the lobster claws. It didn't look like this IRL but my camera decided to give it a reddish hue. =x The nails and bottle are color accurate though.

Purple Rose of Virgo is a mix of micro, small and medium blue, silver, holographic and largely purple glitter and some shimmer suspended in a sheer purple base. Since it is too sheer to build up opacity, I layered one coat of it over black for the swatches in this post. Not only does that make the glitters stand out, it made removal a piece of cake too! No need for foils! :D

*bam* Instant galaxy nails! Yes, that was the reason behind the name.

Here's a look at it in the sun.
Look how bright some of the glitters are! They are literally glowing on the nails!

Here's a blown up of the nail *drools*:

Like a proud mama, I wore this as a full mani to my school and received quite a few compliments! I didn't think the glitters were that obvious but apparently it was quite eye-catching :D

What do you think of my Purple Rose of Virgo?

Nail Ideas: More Chinese New Year!

Hi everybody!!

It's been too long since I was last here! I went to US and stopped at almost every nail polish place we chanced upon and tried out their polishes! There was so many that, even as I told myself that I would not get any for fear of them being confiscated at the customs or broken in my roughly handled luggages, I could not help buying three bottles >_<

Anyway, here is a picture taken on one of the days after visiting SEPHORA (omg nail polish heaven). Pardon the untidy painting because I was standing in the shop and people kept bumping into me.

China Glaze's Up All Night is on my little finger, but it has chipped from unpacking my luggage. Maybe a post next time! On the index, middle and ring fingers are from Nails Inc. I am totally in love with the one on my index and could not help staring at it all the time! Flakies! Not a great fan of green, but the one on my middle finger is gorgeous too! The one on the ring finger is a magnetic polish; the effect was more obvious right after I did it, but it actually faded away after a day! Was quite surprised and disappointed. No magnetic for me I guess? I cannot remember the one on my thumb but it reminds me of Deborah Lippman's Ruby Red Slippers, which I have been hankering after but could not find anywhere despite keeping a constant lookout. Quite upset about that. Oh well, but at least I can borrow it from Mich to try ;)

Anyway, so much about that. Let's get started with the nail idea for the lunar new year! As most Chinese would know, red is the colour to wear for the lunar new year; at least that is what is expected of us from the elders and the older generation. Colours like black or other darker colours are really taboo and a definite no-no, at least on the first day of the new year and when visiting others' houses. So, red nail polish is kinda 'duh'. Something like this:

And under white light (super bling-bling!):

I used Paris NeedMe nail polish for the base. It has a bit of a pearly finish, but that is not quite obvious. The formula is quite thick, so one coat is sufficiently opaque. The red is quite bright on first coat, but a second coat gives it a deeper tone that I love. This is with one coat:

This is with two coats (you can see the pearly finish a bit better here):

The difference is not very obvious, but I personally prefer two coats, because the dark red is so mesmerising. However, bearing in mind that my grandmother prefers to see brighter colours for the new year, I have decided to stick with one coat. Here is a side-by-side comparison (only the nail on the little finger received two coats):

I made the camera go out of focus so that the glitter would be less distracting and the base would become more obvious, as in this picture:

And that brings me to the glitter polish, something that we have come across before, right here on ThePolishWell: OPI's Teenage Dream! As in the picture below, the glitter is silver and reflects multi-coloured goodness (picture above) =O

The glitter is quite dense, so one layer is enough (for me):

Somehow, I saw one of the polishes I bought in the US - Sinful Colors: Nail Junkie - and thought: why not? It was kind of an impulsive decision to layer Nail Junkie on, since green (sheer green base) does not go all that well with red, right? But I was too anxious to try on the tantalising bottle to care. So here it is - just one coat and the glitter is so dense and breathtaking:

The formula is jelly-like yet not so thick that it's difficult to apply. In fact the glitter spreads out more easily than those in Teenage Dream. Even so, the density is enough to go without needing another coat! I simply love this polish!

Admittedly, it is not the perfect combination but it did not turn out as bad as I thought it would. Perhaps I was too pessimistic. But the thing is, layering Nail Junkie on red is awesome!! I have since then looked at other swatches of Nail Junkie, but most of them are on green-ish polish, and as mentioned above, green is not really my colour. So this really made my day - that my green-ish Nail Junkie polish turned out to be so awesome. Muahaha. Following which, I went mad with the camera. Here's Nail Junkie on red from the left:

Here's Nail Junkie on red from the top; from this angle, it is so dark and mysterious, yet shiny and colourful:

From the left:

I am totally taken away by this seemingly ordinary polish. Purple, blue, teal, lime green, yellow, orange - it has it all! The glitter comes in different shapes and sizes, just like those in Teenage Dream. Definitely goes right to my list of favourite polishes! Here's a real close-up view, and you can see the red base work its wonder:

The red base does not make the background seem so harsh, as a black base would. Some other bloggers who have used Nail Junkie layered it over navy or dark green, but that would not quite go with the Chinese New Year theme in my case. However, I might just try a comparison swatch with my other dark coloured polishes with Nail Junkie some time in the future, so watch this space! ;)

So here is the end result - all bright red with a tinge of rebelliousness =P

With this bright red get-up, you might even be forgiven for bringing that black wallet or handbag out, or wearing black killer heels (though you still might not want to wear a black dress).

Here's wishing you a very happy lunar new year, and may all good things come your way! Let me indulge in some festive greetings: 恭喜发财,万事如意,鸿运当头,事事顺利! (Loosely translates to: have a prosperous and smooth-sailing year ahead!) =D

Till next time,
xoxo

Silky Girl: Mauve Dreams

Hello lovelies!

Today, I've decided to stick to a neutral color to cleanse my palate so to speak.

Mauve Dreams is a mauve / dusty pink-lavender jelly. I didn't care much for the color at first but it grew on me after a while. It's one of the few pinks that makes me feel more womanly than girly. You probably can't see from the bottle in the picture but it is about half-empty. I'm glad my sister insisted on grabbing this from the shelves.

The formula is quite good. It applies smoothly and evens out by the second coat. It dries incredibly shiny and really glossy. Pictures are shown without top coat.

Silky Girl has a small nail collection and they are widely available in most Singapore drugstores. I grabbed mine from Watsons.

What do you think of this color?

Nail Ideas: Chinese New Year!

Good afternoon! Today's post is slightly late because school's started this week for us and in the midst of all the "excitement", I've forgotten to prepare for today's post. ><

To make up for it, I've done a Chinese New Year special!

Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals for the Chinese. Like New Year's Day, the Spring Festival marks the beginning of a New Year under the lunar calendar. This year, CNY falls on the 23 January. For that, we celebrate a whopping 15 days and end with the Lantern Festival. Well, at least that is the traditional way to do it. In Singapore, we only get to enjoy 2 days of public holidays before we head back to school / work. :( While it's true that we don't observe all of the traditional festivities in Singapore, wouldn't it be great if we can enjoy ourselves (and collect red packets*) for 15 days?
*red packets usually contain money and are traditionally given by the elders / married couples to youngsters during CNY*

As this year will be the Year of the Dragon, I had thought to try painting a dragon on my nails. It turned out to be quite a major flop so I gave up. Instead, I've decided to stick to simple ways of jazzing up the color red - which is considered to be an auspicious color by the Chinese.

Nubar 2010 over Megan Miller Roja
Since this is also the year of the flakies, it will be inappropriate to leave out this layering. The orange-gold flakies look absolutely striking against the red. Doesn't it look festive?

OPI Excuse Moi sandwiched between Megan Miller Roja
I looove this jelly sandwich! The dark-colored glitters in Excuse Moi actually appear black and look great over the red <3 Not only that, the nails are insanely sparkly under the light too.

Clatty 296 sponged over Megan Miller Roja
This is another one that I liked. Subtle gold tips! Gotta love that simple elegance. :)

Will you be rocking red on your nails for CNY too?

Ozotic: 505 *picture heavy*

Ah... finally the weekends!!

To celebrate, I've decided to show you this amazing multichrome from Ozotic. If you haven't heard of it before, it's a polish from Australia and has some freaking awesome multichromes in its line. For a multichrome addict like me, that basically means I need every Ozotic. Unfortunately, the price is a little steep so I finally decided on getting my paws on #505. Believe me, it was not an easy choice.

I bought it from Susan at The Subtle Shimmer quite a while ago and only got around to wearing it recently. I nearly slapped myself for not trying it earlier. It was instant love.

Enough talk. To show you how mind-blowing it is:
*highly recommended that you click on the pictures for a larger pic*

*All pictures are shown with one coat of Ozotic 505 over one coat of black*
m.a.g.i.c.a.l.

Ozotic 505 is a freaking gorgeous multichrome that flashes emerald green, teal, blue, purple, pink, red, burnt orange and golden green. This is one of the few pictures where I've managed to capture most (not all) of the colors in a single shot.

Ozotic 505 by itself is very sheer and I definitely do not recommend wasting this precious liquid by adding several coats. Instead, layer it over black and watch it come to life on your nails!

Don't have #505 yet? Fret not. I have mooooreee pictures!
*in order of the color shift as far as possible*

First, the teal and blue:

Shifting into purple...

The purple and the pink...

Pink and red...

Then the gold and green...

Here's an awkward shot to capture the golden green that's only visible at the extreme angles:

*spooky nails*
Here's another awkward shot that has both the emerald green / teal from one end of the spectrum and the golden green from the other end of the spectrum:

Are you drooling yet?

Just in case you are wondering, yes, I did stare at my nails constantly throughout the entire day and noting down the colors that I've glimpsed. It's really really gorgeous. As Karine from Nailderella puts it, you just have to shift your hand a single millimeter just to see the color shift. The multichrome is that strong. I did my best trying to capture the color shifts but it was hard to get the real beauty of it on the camera. In my defense, I've already tried to make up for my lack of photography skills by taking more than 50 pictures at different angles over two days (slightly different lighting). You simply have to experience Ozotic 505 for yourself!

Good news for Singaporeans, you can get yourself some Ozotic from Susan at The Subtle Shimmer or from Mei Mei's Signatures. Mei Mei ships international too.

Franken: Spring Kisses

I've finally taken the plunge. Over the weekend, I've put on my lab clothes (figuratively) and concocted my first franken! I happened to have just a few drops of top coat left in my Sally Hansen bottle. Since I couldn't be bothered to scoop them up, I decided to try my hand at frankening! :D

Here's what I've got:

To be honest, I'm not quite sure how to describe this color. It's a slightly dusty pastel(?) pinkish purple that leans purple or pink depending on the lighting.

When I started mixing the polishes, I wasn't sure what I had in mind - only a vague idea that I wanted a dusty color. I grabbed a few bottles of old polishes and poured a little of each into the bottle. It turned out to be a bad idea because the bottle is, well, pink. -_- I couldn't see how the mixture is turning out. Fail, mich, fail.

In the end, I just went along with the knowledge that red + blue = purple. I chose polishes with shimmer because I didn't want a creme. I also added some white to soften the color and grey for that dusty look - well, at least that was what I hoped the white and grey would do. Hahaha! Finally, I added some holographic micro-glitter into the mix. Unfortunately, most of the holo got swallowed by the base :(

Here's a close up shot to show you the shimmer and the tiny holographic micro-glitters:

Here's a look under strong direct sunlight - and it was only 9 in the morning!!

I wasn't, and still am not, sure whether I like it or not. It's not terribly eye-catching but at certain angles, it looks kind of demure, soft and shimmery - perfect for spring.

So... what do you think of my first franken? Have you tried frankening before?
Hmmm.. I'm thinking I should probably name this too. Any ideas?
Edit: Thank you for all your suggestions! I think I will settle for naming this "Spring Kisses" because it really shouts spring to me :)

Nubar: 2010

Some say that 2012 will be the year of the flakies. It seems to be the case for almost all polish companies are pushing out some flakies of sorts - FingerPaints, Zoya, Essie, etc. And for good reason too - it's a very simple way to jazz up your basic manicure!

One of my favorite flakies has to be Nubar 2010. It has been around for quite a while already but still has my heart. <3

If you don't already know, I'm a huge sucker for duochromes. Color-shifting flakies are no exceptions. Just look how pretty it is! Red, orange, yellow, gold and green! The main color seems to be red/orange. When layered over black, it really looks like glowing embers.

The green doesn't really show up as much on the nails unless you angle them like so:
Oops! Should have wrapped my tips!
For some reason, this layering reminds me of this:

Ah... Gotta love Adele!
Am I the only one who thinks that this is what setting fire to the rain on a dark night looks like?
